Neo-Latin Drama

Nine essays (three of them in French, one in German) explore how the authors of Neo-Latin dramas imitated Roman authors (e.g. Plautus, Terence, and Seneca), or what traces of the effect of their dramas can be found. The plays were certainly able to have an impact, since they circulated throughout Europe in print, manuscript, reading at school, and performance. Thus, reception takes a threefold form: the reception of Roman theatre in the Early Modern period, the reception of drama through print and performance, and the reception of plays in the hearts and minds of the audience.
