History by Generations

Generational Dynamics in Modern History. Edited by Hartmut Berghoff, Uffa Jensen, Christina Lubinski, and Bernd Weisbrod. 13 contributions confront the European idea of "youth generations" and "political generations" from the 1920s up until the time of the post-communist transformation with the more pragmatic American reading of "demographic generations" and "consumer generations". In all these cases, it seems that the generational logic is being reworked according to national agendas of belonging. Generation formation and generation consciousness thus are not foregone conclusions. Rather, they are the outcome of cultural negotiations and opportunity structures in specific historical settings. This is shown here in case studies ranging from the youth cultures of U.
