Together with Book XXXVI, this book traces the history of Rome's war with Antiochus III 191-189 BC. This war and its outcome signalled the beginning of Roman influence in Asia and the eventual expansion of her empire to the Euphrates. The details of the naval operations in the Aegean and the land-fighting are contained in this book, together with the preliminary settlement which preceded the formal terms of peace declared at Apamea. There is also detail of Roman political and sacral affairs in 190-189 BC. The Introduction describes the political background and Livy's performance as historian and as literary artist in this book ands the annotations provide the historical commentary, with explanations of the grammar and syntax as well as observations on Livy's literary techniques for students of Latinity.
