Scheller-Boltz, Dennis: The Discourse on Gender Identity in Contemporary Russia

An Introduction with a Case Study in Russian Gender Linguistics. The study shows the tensions between postgenderism and traditionalism in contemporary Russia, and analyzes how gender and sexuality are instrumentalised and politicised. The study focuses on the discussion of gender and sexuality in Russia following Conchita Wurst's success at the 2014 Eurovison Song Contest and investigates the relation between discourse and identity. Above all, it is concerned with the function of language in identity construction, and in the creation and demarcation of spaces.
