This study centers on the classical scholarship of the Russian poet and scholar Vyacheslav Ivanov, dedicated to the religion of the Greek god Dionysus and the origin of Greek tragedy, and situates Ivanov's ideas in the context of the international scholarly discussions of the 19th and early 20th century and the philosophical influences that played an important role in the evolution of his thought (Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, Schelling, the Slavophiles, and Solov'ev).
