Paschidis, Paschalis: Between City and King

Prosopographical Studies on the Intermediaries between the Cities of the Greek Mainland and the Aegean and the Royal Courts in the Hellenistic Period (322-190 BC). Sheila L. Ager in 'The Journal of Hellenic Studies' (131/2011): "The core of Paschidis' volume on diplomatic intermediaries is a prosopographical catalogue of individuals who served on behalf of their cities (and, in the case of southern Greece, koina) in dealings with Hellenistic sovereigns. An introductory chapter reviews the scholarship on cities and kings and lays out the parameters of the catalogue. Concluding chapters draw out some broader themes, such as the status of civic intermediaries, their relationships with the royal courts), and the role they played in the balance of power and in the political practice of the relations between city and king' (469). A set of appendices, a full bibliography and a series of detailed indices round out the volume. The prosopographical entries are arranged geographically and, within that context, chronologically. Not surprisingly, Athens dominates, but other poleis, such as Samos, Kos, Rhodes and Delos, present a respectable number of examples. The testimonia - chiefly epigraphic and literary - are listed but not reproduced; the bulk of each entry consists of Paschidis' detailed contextualization of the evidence, the historical circumstances and any additional information known about the individual intermediary.
