All of them are alumni of the "Photographers' Masterclass", a decade-long mentorship-program (2008-2018) by curator Simon Njami and the Goethe-Institut. 13 essays, considering African photography in this particular historical moment, complement the book. Similarly varied in style and method, each essay grapples with a leitmotif relevant to thinking about photography in this particular historical moment. Masterclass curators authored most of the essays in this book; they lived "the journey" travelling to various African cities to share their thoughts and ideas on photography in intimate and rigorous workshops.
