Two Hellenistic Medical Papyri of the Ärztekammer Nordrhein (P. ÄkNo 1 and 2)

Edited [with introduction, translation and commentary] by Isabella Andorlini and Robert Walter Daniel. The first papyrus, P.ÄkNo 1, consists of six continuous columns and 17 unplaced fragments of a hitherto unknown work on semiotics. The text is written in a concise style reminiscent of the technical Hippocratic writings though it also contains a number of new medical terms and reflects the recently developed use of the pulse as a diagnostic criterion. This special blend of the old and the new, taken into consideration with the palaeographical dating of the papyrus, suggests that it preserves part of a work written either by important Hellenistic physician Herophilus or by a prominent member of his school. - The short text of P.ÄkNo 2 describes an illness suffered by a named individual. As such it is reminiscent of the case studies of of the Hippocratic "Epidemics". - Both papyri can be dated to the first half of the Hellenistic era, around 220/200-150 BC.
